Roshar

Location from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

A storm-scoured planet where crem-encrusted landscapes shelter retractable life, spren manifest from human emotion, and the echoes of a shattered god still shape everything.

Roshar is a world built by wind and rain. The highstorms sweep from east to west every few days, carrying crem that coats everything in mineral deposits, eroding the landscape into smooth curves and jagged ridges. All native life has adapted: rockbuds split open between storms, axehounds have carapace shells, and greatshells grow armor from crem-hardite. The flora shimmers with a bioluminescent quality during stormlight saturation. Spren appear everywhere — flamespren dancing in fires, windspren racing ahead of travelers, fearspren pooling like dark puddles at people's feet. Most are mindless, but some are ancient and intelligent, remnants of the god Honor who was killed by Odium. The planet sits at the intersection of three Shardic influences: Honor's legacy, Cultivation's patient growth, and Odium's imprisoned fury. Beneath the surface, the singers — the original inhabitants — have reclaimed their forms and their war.

Appearance

Rocky plateaus and stone formations dominate, shaped by millennia of crem deposits from highstorms. Flora retracts into shells and crevices. Grass pulls flat against the ground when touched. The sky shifts between the pale light of calm days and the roiling darkness of approaching storms. No soil except in the far west.

Also known as: Roshar, the Rosharan continent
