The Purelake

Location from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

A vast, shallow inland sea — warm, shin-deep water stretching to the horizon, where laid-back fishers wade barefoot and refuse to worry about anything.

The Purelake is Roshar's vacation that nobody leaves. The water is warm, the fishing is good, and the Purelakers have perfected the art of not caring about continental politics. They wade through shin-deep water all day, catching fish with specialized lures, and genuinely cannot understand why anyone would live somewhere dry and stressful. The lake's fish have mild magical properties — some grant luck, others enhance perception — making them valuable trade goods, though Purelakers don't seem particularly motivated to capitalize on this. The lake is suspected to be fed by Investiture from one of the perpendicularities, which would explain both the warm temperature and the magical fauna. Worldhoppers have been spotted here, taking advantage of the Purelakers' famous incuriosity to operate without scrutiny. It's the one place on Roshar where the coming apocalypse is met with a shrug and an offer to try the fishing.

Appearance

An enormous expanse of crystal-clear water barely reaching the knee. The lake bed is smooth stone, warm from geothermal heat. Fish dart beneath the surface in schools of iridescent color. The sky reflects perfectly in the still water on calm days, making it impossible to tell where water ends and air begins. Small islands with drying racks and fishing shelters dot the landscape.
