The Horneater Peaks

Location from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

Sacred mountains with hot springs that serve as perpendicularities to Shadesmar — homeland of Rock and the Unkalaki people, who can see spren.

The Horneater Peaks are sacred to the Unkalaki people for a reason most Rosharans don't understand — the hot springs near the summits are actually Shardpools, perpendicularities where the Physical and Cognitive Realms overlap. This proximity to Shadesmar gives the Unkalaki their distinctive trait: they can see spren in both Realms, perceiving things invisible to other humans. Rock — Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor — left the Peaks after losing a contest of champions and becoming a bridgeman, eventually joining Bridge Four. His cooking and his loyalty became foundational to the crew. The Peaks themselves are remote, difficult to reach, and deliberately isolated from lowland politics. The Unkalaki maintain their own traditions, their own hierarchy (cooks are highly respected), and their own relationship with the spren that others can barely perceive.

Appearance

Tall, jagged peaks with steam rising from hot springs that pool in terraced basins near the summits. The water shimmers with colors that shift depending on the angle — evidence of the perpendicularity. Hardy mountain vegetation clings to sheltered crevices. The Unkalaki build low stone lodges near the springs, always oriented to face the rising sun.
