Hearthstone

Location from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

A small rural town in northern Alethkar — Kaladin's home, where his father Lirin practices surgery and where the weight of darkeyes' lives under lighteyed rule is felt daily.

Hearthstone is the kind of place that produces soldiers and farmers, not scholars — which makes Kaladin's father Lirin an anomaly. The town sits in Highprince Sadeas's princedom, later transferred to others, and the quality of life depends entirely on which lighteyed citylord currently holds the manor. Under Wistiow, it was tolerable. Under Roshone, it became a petty tyranny of taxes and conscription. This is where Kaladin grew up learning surgery from his father, where his brother Tien was conscripted and killed, and where the fundamental injustice of Alethi society became personal rather than abstract. The town was evacuated during the Singer occupation, its people becoming refugees. For Kaladin, Hearthstone represents everything he fights for and everything he couldn't protect — the gap between what the world is and what his father taught him it should be.

Appearance

A cluster of stone buildings huddled around a citylord's manor on a low hill. Rockbud fields stretch out to the east. Lavis grain polyps grow in carefully tended rows. The town is small enough that everyone knows everyone, and the manor's shadow falls over the square at midday.
