Soulcasters

Item from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

Fabrials worn on the hand that enable Soulcasting — transforming one substance into another by convincing an object's cognitive identity to change. They create food, stone, and oil.

Soulcasters are the infrastructure of Rosharan civilization. Without them, armies couldn't be fed, cities couldn't be built quickly, and sieges would be far more devastating. The device allows a user to touch an object and — through a process that involves convincing the object's cognitive identity in Shadesmar — transform it into another substance. Grain into bread, air into stone, rock into oil. The cost is personal. Prolonged Soulcaster use transforms the user's body, fusing the device into their hand and changing their skin and flesh to resemble the substance they most frequently create. Soulcaster savants become living statues. The Church of the Almighty controls most Soulcasters, making them a source of immense institutional power.

Appearance

A chain-and-gemstone device worn across the back of the hand, with three gemstones set into metal housings connected by delicate chains to finger caps. The gems determine what substances can be produced. Overuse causes the device to fuse with the user's flesh, transforming their skin to match the Soulcast substance.
