Tien

Character from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

Kaladin's younger brother whose death in a bridge crew defined Kaladin's deepest wound. A gentle boy who loved rocks and light, he was conscripted as a soldier and killed in battle far too young.

Tien was Kaladin's younger brother — a gentle, creative boy who found beauty in ordinary things, especially rocks and the way light played through them. He may have been an incipient Lightweaver, given his affinity for seeing hidden beauty and his effect on the moods of those around him. When Amaram conscripted soldiers from Hearthstone, Kaladin volunteered to protect Tien. Despite his efforts, Tien was placed in a bridge crew and killed in battle — a death Kaladin witnessed and could not prevent. This failure is the defining trauma of Kaladin's life, driving his compulsive need to protect others and his devastating guilt when he cannot. Tien appears in Kaladin's memories and visions as a reminder of innocence lost and the cost of the lighteyed power structure that treats darkeyes as expendable.

Appearance

Young Alethi boy with a bright, open face and curious eyes. Smaller and slighter than Kaladin, with an artist's hands rather than a warrior's. Often seen examining rocks and holding them up to catch the light.
