Character from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
Cultivation's godspren who grants boons and curses to petitioners — an alien intelligence that bargains with mortal desires in a shadowed valley.
The Nightwatcher speaks with an alien cadence that suggests she is translating concepts that don't map cleanly to human language. She grants boons and curses to those who visit her valley — a transaction she finds natural but petitioners find terrifying. Her understanding of human desire is sophisticated but slightly off-center, like a translation that captures meaning but misses nuance. She is Cultivation's spren, a godspren on par with the Stormfather, but where he rages, she grows. Her curses are not punishments but balancing forces — or experiments. She is less hostile than indifferent to human concerns, operating on timescales and priorities that make mortal urgency seem quaint.
Manifests as an enormous being of flowing green-black mist and vines in her valley. Her form shifts constantly — sometimes serpentine, sometimes vaguely feminine, always unsettling. Thousands of tendrils extend from her body, probing and tasting the air. Her eyes, when they coalesce, are deep green and ancient. The valley around her is unnaturally fertile, thick with growth that moves without wind.
