Maya

Character from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

A deadeye cultivationspren killed in the Recreance — Adolin's Shardblade who is slowly being revived through his refusal to treat her as a mere weapon.

Maya does not speak — cannot speak — except for the one word she screamed at the trial in Lasting Integrity: her own name, MAYALARAN, a declaration of identity that shattered centuries of assumptions about deadeyes. She was killed during the Recreance when her Radiant broke their bond, severing her mind and leaving her a mindless shell that could be summoned as a Shardblade. Adolin treats her differently than any Shardbearer in history: he talks to her, practices with her in Shadesmar, apologizes when he dismisses her, and defended her personhood before a court of spren. Her slow awakening — responding to his voice, moving with purpose, eventually speaking — represents the possibility that the Recreance's greatest crime can be undone. She chose to defend humans at the trial, declaring that the Radiant spren were complicit in the bond-breaking.

Appearance

As a Shardblade, manifests as a long silvery sword with a dead, scratched pattern along the blade — beautiful but visibly damaged. In Shadesmar, appears as a tall figure with branching features like a cultivationspren, but her eyes are scratched out — the mark of a deadeye spren. Her movements are shambling and disconnected, though she has begun to show moments of focused awareness. Faint traces of green occasionally flicker in her scratched eyes.
