Ildithia

Location from Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

Formerly Atlanta — a city of salt that moves across the landscape, buildings dissolving behind it and regrowing ahead, ruled by a Coven of Epics and haunted by the most powerful one of all.

Ildithia is the series' most surreal setting. A mobile salt city that never stops moving, ruled by the Coven — a group of Epics who maintain uneasy shared authority. Larcener (Calamity's Earth avatar) is the Coven's most powerful member, though he's mostly interested in complaining about humans. The transient nature of the city creates a specific social structure: nothing is permanent, possession is fluid, and power belongs to whoever can claim it before the salt dissolves. Mob-like protection structures have emerged. Families relocate constantly. The only permanence is the Epics. Prof (as Limelight) attacks Ildithia in Calamity, and the city becomes the final battleground for the series. David builds his team here, raids Knighthawk's Foundry from here, and makes his final stand against both Prof and Calamity in the shifting salt streets.

Appearance

An entire city made of salt — white, crystalline, gleaming. It MOVES, slowly traversing the Kansas countryside (in book 3). The trailing edge of the city dissolves as it moves; the leading edge grows new salt structures. Buildings are transient — residents must relocate every few weeks as their district crumbles behind them and regrows ahead. The aesthetic is beautiful and unsettling: a city that consumes itself and is reborn continuously.
