Character from Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson
Steelheart's shadow — the Epic who blotted out the sun over Newcago and maintained ten years of darkness because his master demanded it.
Nightwielder maintains the permanent darkness over Newcago — a shroud of black fog that blocks all sunlight. He's Steelheart's most important lieutenant because his power is what makes Newcago's regime psychologically effective: people who never see the sun are easier to control. He can turn fully intangible, kill with shadow tendrils, and solidify darkness into physical barriers. He is a High Epic — his intangibility serves as prime invincibility. He's also quiet, obedient, and the kind of lieutenant who does what he's told without needing to understand why. His weakness is UV light. Under ultraviolet radiation, his intangibility fails and his darkness disperses. The Reckoners use this to kill him during the Steelheart operation.
Shadowy, incorporeal, difficult to see clearly. He exists as much as a presence as a person — darkness clings to him, tendrils of shadow trailing from his form. When he chooses to be tangible, he's humanoid but indistinct. When he's intangible, he passes through walls like a ghost made of night.
