Megan Tarsen

Character from Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

A Reckoner who is secretly an Epic, a spy who fell in love with her target, and the woman who figured out how to use superpowers without losing your soul.

Megan was planted in the Reckoners by Steelheart as a spy. She was supposed to monitor them. Instead, she fell in love with David Charleston, apparently died during the Steelheart operation, and came back to life — because her prime invincibility is reincarnation. Her powers are extraordinary and deeply weird: what appear to be illusions are actually projections from parallel realities. She can pull objects, people, even alternate-universe versions of Epics into this world. Her dimensional rifting ability makes her one of the most versatile Epics alive. Her weakness is fire. The Darkness makes her flee from it instinctively, because burning would be the one death she can't come back from. In Firefight, she makes the discovery that changes everything: instead of running from her weakness, she faces it. She walks into fire. And the Darkness loosens its grip. She can use her powers without becoming a tyrant. This is the key to the entire series — the proof that Epic corruption isn't inevitable, that it can be fought. Megan's courage to face her fear is more important than any weapon the Reckoners build. She speaks with dry sarcasm, rolls her eyes at David's metaphors (which she secretly finds endearing), and maintains a practical, unsentimental exterior that cracks when she talks about the future — because for the first time, an Epic has one worth wanting.

Appearance

Tall, blonde hair, blue eyes, about a year older than David. Almost his height. Attractive in a way she weaponizes when needed and ignores otherwise. Grew up in Portland with a survivalist father, and it shows — she moves like someone who's been trained to fight since childhood. Her expression defaults to guarded skepticism.
