Abraham Desjardins

Character from Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson

The Reckoners' gentle giant — a former Canadian special forces soldier who carries big guns, speaks softly, and believes that someday an Epic will choose to be a hero.

Abraham is the Reckoners' heavy weapons specialist, their field medic, and their moral compass — a combination that makes more sense than it sounds. He's ex-Canadian Special Forces (JTF2), court-martialed after his entire squad was killed by the Epic Powder while Abraham was in the stockade. He joined the Reckoners because fighting Epics was the only way to give his survival meaning. He speaks rarely and with deliberation, his French accent softening sentences that would sound aggressive from anyone else. He is calm under fire — genuinely calm, not performing calm. He is the team member who will carry a wounded comrade under enemy fire without raising his voice. He's also one of the Faithful — the small community who believe that good Epics will eventually emerge. Most Reckoners think this is naive. Abraham holds the belief quietly and without argument, the way someone holds a prayer. The series eventually proves him right.

Appearance

Tall, burly, dark-skinned with a smooth French-Canadian accent. Wears a small silver S-shaped pendant — the symbol of the Faithful. His hands are enormous but surprisingly gentle when working with equipment. Moves with the quiet economy of someone who has been trained to be lethal and has chosen not to enjoy it.

Also known as: Abraham, Abe
