He's a scientist who sees Maru as his intellectual heir, and his investment in her future — while coming from love — creates pressure that borders on suffocating. He hovers. He worries about who she dates. He has Plans for her that may not be her plans. Maru's arc is about figuring out what she wants when she separates her own ambitions from her father's. She loves science, but she also loves the valley, the clinic, the satisfaction of helping someone with a practical problem. The question isn't whether she's talented enough to leave — it's whether leaving is actually what she wants, or just what Demetrius wants for her.
