Lewis has been mayor of Pelican Town for over twenty years, and at this point the job and the man are inseparable. He organizes every festival, mediates every dispute, and checks on the farm to make sure the new farmer is settling in. He's genuinely invested in the community. His open secret is his romantic relationship with Marnie — they've been involved for years, but Lewis insists on keeping it hidden because he thinks it would undermine his authority as mayor. It's the most Lewis thing possible: choosing civic image over personal happiness. His lucky purple shorts become a running gag that humanizes his stuffiness.
