George is the valley's resident grump. He sits in his wheelchair, watches TV, complains about his back, and tells anyone who'll listen that things were better in the old days. He was a miner before an accident put him in the chair, and the loss of independence still burns. But George's gruffness is a shell. He loves Evelyn deeply. He's proud of Alex even when he can't say it. He warms up to the farmer slowly, and when he does, his compliments are worth more because they're so rare. His friendship arc is about learning that accepting help isn't the same as being helpless.
