The Island

Location from Squid Game by Hwang Dong-hyuk

A remote island off the Korean coast that houses the entire Squid Game operation — a self-contained death factory disguised as a playground.

The island smells like salt water and industrial chemicals. The sound never stops — ventilation systems humming, distant announcements echoing through corridors, the occasional sharp report that everyone learns to recognize as gunfire. Players are transported here sedated and leave in coffins or not at all. Every surface is monitored. Every corridor has cameras. The pink-suited guards patrol in patterns that feel random but aren't. The contrast between the cheerful aesthetics of the game spaces and the brutal function of the infrastructure is deliberate — the entire facility is designed to disorient, infantilize, and control. The island has been operational since 1988, running annual games for over thirty years. Its location is unknown to the outside world. Players who vote to leave are sedated and returned to their lives. The ones who stay are either winners or cremated remains.

Appearance

A rocky island rising from grey ocean, accessible only by ferry. From the outside, unremarkable — one of thousands of uninhabited islands along the Korean coast. Inside, a massive industrial complex of interconnected facilities: dormitories, game arenas, staff quarters, monitoring stations, a crematorium. The architecture alternates between childlike whimsy (pastel stairways, playground equipment) and brutal industrial function (concrete corridors, steel doors, surveillance arrays).
