Red Light, Green Light

Item from Squid Game by Hwang Dong-hyuk

A children's game of freeze-and-move scaled to lethal dimensions — if the doll catches you moving, snipers open fire.

Red Light, Green Light is the first game, and its purpose is horror. Every player walked in expecting a children's game. The first time someone moves after the doll turns around and a sniper bullet tears through them, the entire psychological contract of the Squid Game is established in three seconds: this is real, these are children's games, and losing means dying. The game tests nerve, not skill. The players who survive are the ones who can force their bodies to freeze while surrounded by gunfire and screaming. It's a test of panic control, which is what every subsequent game will also require in different forms. 255 of 456 players died in the first round of the 33rd game. The Korean name — 'The Hibiscus Flower Has Bloomed' — is the chant Korean children sing while playing this game in schoolyards. The doll's cheerful voice singing it while snipers execute players is the show's entire aesthetic in a single scene.

Appearance

Played in a massive enclosed arena designed like a rural Korean landscape. The giant Young-hee doll stands at the far end. When her back is turned, players run toward her. When she spins around, anyone detected moving is shot. The chant — 'mugunghwa kkochi pieotseumnida' — sets the rhythm.
