Hide and Seek

Item from Squid Game by Hwang Dong-hyuk

Hiders run, seekers hunt — but if a seeker can't find anyone to kill, the seeker dies instead.

Hide and Seek introduces a horrifying inversion: seekers who fail to eliminate anyone are themselves executed. This turns every player into either prey or a reluctant predator — the red gumball doesn't just make you a seeker, it makes you someone who must kill to survive. The maze is disorienting by design. Corridors twist. Rooms have multiple exits. Sound carries unpredictably. Hiders try to reach an exit door within 30 minutes. Seekers try to find and kill at least one hider before time runs out. The dynamic creates scenes of people who were allies minutes ago now hunting each other. This is the game during which Jun-hee goes into labor. While seekers hunt through corridors, Geum-ja and Hyun-ju help deliver a baby in a hiding spot — new life arriving in the middle of a murder maze. The contrast is the most powerful image of Season 2.

Appearance

A complex maze with multiple rooms, corridors, and hiding spots. Players draw gumballs — blue for hiders, red for seekers. The maze is dimly lit and claustrophobic, designed to create confusion and panic. The aesthetic is more industrial than childlike — Hide and Seek drops the playground pretense.
