Ddakji

Item from Squid Game by Hwang Dong-hyuk

A folded paper tile game played in subway stations — the Recruiter's audition to find out how much dignity you'll sell for cash.

Ddakji is the gateway drug. The Recruiter places one tile on the ground and challenges his target to flip it by throwing the other tile at it. Win and get 100,000 won. Lose and get slapped — or owe 100,000 won. The game is simple, physical, and slightly humiliating, which is exactly the point. The choice between the red and blue tiles echoes the Japanese urban legend of Aka Manto — both choices lead to the same destination. The game identifies people desperate enough to trade physical humiliation for cash, which is the exact psychological profile the Squid Games need. Ddakji isn't just a recruitment tool. It's the show's thesis statement played in a subway station.

Appearance

Two folded paper tiles, one red and one blue, each about the size of a playing card but thicker. Simple origami construction. The Recruiter carries them in his briefcase alongside stacks of cash.
