Jang Geum-ja

Character from Squid Game by Hwang Dong-hyuk

Player 149 — a retired nurse who entered a death game to pay off her son's debts, only to discover her son had entered the same game for the same reason.

Geum-ja doesn't waste time on self-pity. She's a former nurse, which means she's spent decades dealing with crisis, pain, and death without flinching. She approaches the games the same way — assess the situation, identify who needs help, act. She becomes a mother figure to the younger players whether they want one or not. She entered to pay off her son Yong-sik's debts. Yong-sik — a gambling addict, Player 007 — entered to pay off his debts and give his mother a better life. Neither knew the other was there. Their storyline is the season's most devastating irony: a mother and son each trying to sacrifice themselves for the other, trapped in the same death machine. Her nursing skills make her invaluable. She helps deliver Jun-hee's baby during Hide and Seek. She patches up injuries. She commands respect through competence, not volume. When she gives an order in a crisis, people listen — because she sounds like someone who has talked people through worse.

Appearance

Elderly Korean woman, small but with the erect posture and sharp eyes of someone who spent a career keeping people alive. Her hands are steady — nurse's hands. Her face is weathered and expressive, cycling between fierce maternal protectiveness and no-nonsense practicality.
