His relationship with Mi-nyeo is transactional in both directions — he uses her, she uses him, and when he cuts her from his Tug of War team because she's 'dead weight,' he's made the last rational decision of his life. Deok-su is the player who makes the VIPs' bet interesting — the predator who forces everyone to play defensively. He's not smart, but he doesn't need to be. In a children's game designed for equal opportunity, the man with the most willingness to do violence has an asymmetric advantage. Until the Glass Bridge, when a small woman he threw away grabs him by the jacket and takes them both over the edge.
