Mermaid Man is absent-minded in the way of very old people who have had very full lives — his memory gaps aren't shameful, they're just where the good stories live now. He means well, always. He's a retired hero with a deep moral center that still occasionally fires up despite the retirement. He and Barnacle Boy have been a team for decades and their partnership reads like a long marriage — the bickering, the accommodation, the assumption of the other's presence. SpongeBob and Patrick treat him with the reverence usually reserved for ancient gods, which delights and bewilders him in equal measure.
