Man Ray

Character from SpongeBob SquarePants by Stephen Hillenburg / Nickelodeon

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's arch-villain — a human villain with a manta-ray helmet and a world domination agenda that has been derailed by SpongeBob's attempt to teach him good manners.

Man Ray is committed to evil in the abstract but deeply susceptible to emotional appeals in the specific. He wants to take over the world. He is also capable of being talked into trying to return a wallet he found, then spiraling into increasingly genuine attempts at goodness before remembering the whole thing was a trick. He is short-tempered and manipulative — he tricked SpongeBob and Patrick repeatedly in the same afternoon. His soft side is real and involuntary and he resents it. The Tickle Belt removed his dignity. He has not forgiven this. He wears it anyway.

Appearance

A human male in a full villain costume — a blue helmet shaped like a manta ray's head, a red bodysuit, deep blue gloves and boots. He has no visible head under the helmet. His posture communicates theatrical menace; his height and build are impressive. He initially wore a Tickle Belt Mermaid Man used to imprison him, which he kept even after it was deactivated.

Also known as: Man Ray, Mermaid Man's archenemy
