Lines of Sanzu

Item from soul-eater by

Three white stripes in Death the Kid's hair that are literally extensions of his father's power — connecting them fully would complete Kid's shinigami transformation and grant catastrophic divine power.

The Lines of Sanzu are not aesthetic. They are metaphysical — connections between Kid's soul and the full scope of Lord Death's power, sealed in dormant form until Kid is ready or circumstances force activation. Partial connections have happened in crisis; each one grants a surge of power that temporarily solves the immediate problem and temporarily unmoors Kid from his careful control. Full connection would make Kid genuinely divine — a shinigami in full standing rather than a shinigami in training. It would also make him symmetrical. The fact that this is simultaneously the most terrifying and most appealing prospect to him is not lost on anyone.

Appearance

Three white horizontal stripes on the left side of Kid's otherwise black hair, positioned above his ear. They are perfectly straight. They are only on the left side. This asymmetry is the source of Kid's greatest ongoing distress. When partially or fully connected they glow, and the air around Kid changes quality.
