Spirit earned his Death Scythe status through real sacrifice and effort, working alongside a meister who was a better person than he deserved. He cheated on his wife — Maka's mother — repeatedly, she left, and he has spent every day since trying to make amends with a daughter who has weaponized her father's inadequacy into academic ambition. He is not a villain. He is a deeply human figure in an inhuman setting: capable, brave, genuinely loving, and limited in the specific domestic ways that cause the most collateral damage. His relationship with Lord Death is almost paternal in reversal — he serves with real loyalty. His relationship with Maka is one of the most emotionally true things in the series: she loves him and cannot stand him and he knows it.
