The Gaia Temples are the planet's immune system made architecture. They were built — or perhaps grown — at the points where the boundary between the surface world and the planetary core is thinnest. Each one acts as a node in a network that keeps the planet structurally sound and keeps Dark Gaia contained during its slumber. When Eggman shattered the planet, he broke the network. The temples still stand, but they're disconnected — missing the Chaos Emeralds that serve as their power source. Restoring each Emerald to its temple reactivates that node, heals the surrounding landmass, and strengthens the seal on Dark Gaia. Different civilizations built different exteriors, but the interiors share a design language that predates human construction. Professor Pickle theorizes that the temples were here first and humans built around them. The geometric patterns on the walls match nothing in any human artistic tradition. They match each other. Chip feels at home in every single one of them. He can't explain why until he remembers that he built them — or rather, that they built themselves around his purpose, millions of years ago, in a cycle he's forgotten.
Massive stone temples of varying architectural styles, each reflecting the continent they sit on — Mediterranean columns in Apotos, pagoda elements in Chun-nan, sandstone arches in Shamar. Despite their cultural differences, all share common features: a central altar where a Chaos Emerald fits perfectly, geometric patterns carved into walls that glow faintly with residual energy, and a depth that extends far below the surface into the planet's geological layers. They feel old in a way that has nothing to do with architecture and everything to do with purpose.
