The Chaos Emeralds are the most powerful objects on the planet and possibly in the universe. They can warp time, space, and reality. They powered Sonic's Super Sonic form. Eggman used them to fuel his planet-cracking laser, and the process drained them of their energy completely. Now they're scattered across the continents, one near each Gaia Temple. Restoring a drained Emerald to its temple recharges it and heals the corresponding piece of the planet — the continental fragment locks back into place, the crack seals, and one more piece of the world becomes whole again. This is the structure of the entire journey: find the Emerald, reach the temple, restore the connection, watch a piece of the world heal. Seven Emeralds, seven temples, seven continents to cross. Each restoration weakens the Werehog form slightly and weakens Dark Gaia's hold on the planet. Chip's connection to the Emeralds is instinctive and unexplained — to him. Seven gems, each a different color — blue, red, green, yellow, cyan, purple, and silver-white. In their powered state, they glow with inner light and hover of their own accord. In their current drained state, they are dull, gray, and inert — stones rather than jewels. They feel heavier than they should. Chip can sense them even when they're dormant, a pull he doesn't understand drawing him toward their locations across the world.
