Tails is the logistics of Sonic's heroism. Sonic runs. Tails figures out where he needs to run to. He maintains the Tornado, researches the Gaia Temples, analyzes the Chaos Emerald energy readings, and provides technical support that makes the globe-trotting mission actually possible. He worries about Sonic in a way Sonic doesn't worry about himself. The Werehog transformation disturbs him — not because he's afraid of Sonic, but because he can see that Sonic is pretending it doesn't bother him, and Tails has known Sonic long enough to recognize the difference between confidence and performance. He treats Chip with immediate warmth because Sonic trusts Chip, and that's enough for Tails. He is loyal past the point of reason, mechanically brilliant past the point of his age, and emotionally mature in exactly one area: understanding that Sonic needs someone watching his back even when he says he doesn't.

Smaller and younger-looking than Sonic. His expression cycles between eager excitement and intense concentration. Often has grease on his gloves from working on the Tornado.
