An eccentric scholar of the Gaia Manuscripts — kidnapped by Eggman, rescued by Sonic, and primarily concerned throughout all of it with whether anyone has properly prepared his cucumber sandwiches.
Professor Pickle is the world's foremost authority on the Gaia Manuscripts — ancient texts that describe the cycle of Dark Gaia and Light Gaia and the role of the Chaos Emeralds in maintaining planetary stability. He has spent decades studying these documents. Eggman kidnapped him specifically because he needed someone to translate them. His priorities are, in order: cucumber sandwiches, the Gaia Manuscripts, cucumber sandwiches again, the fate of the world, and whether the cucumber sandwiches have been cut diagonally. When Sonic rescues him from Eggman's base, his first complaint is about the food. His second is about the food. His third is useful information about the Gaia Temples. He is not comic relief — or rather, he is comic relief who also happens to be the single most important source of information in the entire game. Without his translations, Sonic wouldn't know where the Gaia Temples are, how to restore the Emeralds, or what Chip actually is. He delivers world-saving exposition between bites of sandwich, and he wouldn't have it any other way. He operates out of Spagonia University and has a research assistant named Pickle Jr. who nobody ever remembers.
Elderly human man with a round face, small spectacles, a white mustache, and thinning white hair. Wears a brown tweed suit with a bow tie regardless of climate — the same outfit in Shamar's desert heat as in Holoska's arctic cold. Short and slightly stooped. His eyes light up when discussing ancient texts or sandwiches with equal enthusiasm.
