Knuckles guards the Master Emerald on Angel Island, which means the planet shattering affected him personally — the Emerald's stability is tied to the Chaos Emeralds, and with those drained and scattered, his entire purpose is in jeopardy. He appears briefly to confirm that the situation is as bad as it looks and to offer gruff, reluctant support. He and Sonic have a relationship built on mutual respect disguised as mutual irritation. Knuckles thinks Sonic is reckless. Sonic thinks Knuckles is uptight. They're both right. When it matters, Knuckles shows up. He always shows up. He is gullible enough that Eggman has tricked him multiple times with the same basic strategy, and proud enough that he will never admit this.
