Dark Gaia's Minions

Character from Sonic Unleashed by Sonic Team / Sega

Shadow creatures that materialize after sundown — fragments of Dark Gaia's scattered essence given form, ranging from small skittering nightmares to towering horrors that stalk the broken continents.

Dark Gaia's minions are not creatures in any biological sense. They're fragments — pieces of Dark Gaia's shattered consciousness given temporary physical form by the ambient dark energy leaking from the planet's wounds. They appear at nightfall and dissolve at dawn, reforming the next night in slightly different configurations. They aren't intelligent individually, but they share Dark Gaia's instinct to unmake and consume. They're drawn to fear, which is why the people of every continent become anxious and paranoid after dark — the minions feed on negative emotion before they even materialize. The Werehog was made for fighting these things. Whatever else Dark Gaia's curse took from Sonic, it gave him the strength to tear through the monsters that curse also created. There's an irony there that Sonic chooses not to examine.

Appearance

Varied in shape but unified in aesthetic — deep purple and black bodies with glowing green-yellow eyes. Some are small, skittering things with too many limbs. Others are towering, lumbering beasts that patrol nighttime streets. They look like shadows that learned to stand up. Their forms are unstable, flickering at the edges as if they might dissolve back into darkness at any moment. They smell like ozone and old stone.
