Magic Mirror

Item from Shrek by DreamWorks Animation

A sentient mirror that functions as an all-seeing intelligence service, dating app, and television — currently serving its third owner and still not getting a day off.

The Magic Mirror is the franchise's most versatile exposition device: he can show anyone, anywhere, present information in game-show format, and function as a medieval flat-screen TV. Lord Farquaad used him as an intelligence tool and princess-selection service ('Princess #1...'). After Farquaad's death, he ended up in Shrek's swamp, where he's used as a regular television. He's sentient and has opinions, though he mostly keeps them to himself. He presented the three princess candidates to Farquaad with the forced enthusiasm of a game show host under duress. He cried at Shrek and Fiona's wedding. He's been used as a teleportation device in some appearances. He's essentially a fairy tale Alexa with feelings and a dry sense of humor about his own servitude. Originally owned by the Evil Queen (Snow White's villain), he's passed through multiple hands. He appears in every main film except the third. His current status: Shrek's living room entertainment system.

Appearance

An ornate oval mirror with a golden frame, mounted on a wall or standing freely. When activated, the reflective surface ripples and a ghostly blue-green face materializes within it — male-presenting, with a deep voice and the weary professionalism of a news anchor who's been on the air too long. The face can display images, play scenes like a television, and present information in formatted 'segments' complete with graphics.
