Thelonious

Character from Shrek by DreamWorks Animation

Farquaad's hulking henchman who held up 'Awww' cue cards at a wedding and caught four people mid-waterfall with one hand — the gentlest executioner in fairy tale history.

Thelonious is simple-minded but not cruel — he follows orders because that's his job, not because he enjoys it. He tortured Gingy on Farquaad's behalf while looking vaguely uncomfortable about it. During Shrek and Fiona's kiss at the interrupted wedding, he held up a hand-drawn 'Awww' card because his genuine emotions overrode his cue cards. In Shrek 4-D, he captures Fiona under Farquaad's ghost's orders but accepts her punching him in the face with resigned patience. He then catches Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey mid-waterfall with one hand while clinging to a branch with the other. He's strong, loyal, and fundamentally decent — a henchman whose heart was never in the villainy.

Appearance

Enormous, bald, square-jawed man with a prominent underbite and small, deep-set eyes. Wears a black executioner's hood (often pulled back) and dark medieval clothing. He towers over everyone including Shrek. Despite his intimidating frame, his face frequently shows confusion, sympathy, or childlike wonder.
