Rumpelstiltskin speaks in the oily cadence of a used-car salesman who's memorized every line and forgotten the human being underneath. He's snarky, stingy, and ungenerous — a deal-maker whose contracts are technically legal and morally monstrous. He doesn't use magic directly; he uses magical contracts that warp reality based on what's written in them. He tricked Shrek into signing away the day he was born, creating an alternate timeline where Shrek never existed, Fiona was a guerrilla resistance leader, and Rumpelstiltskin was the tyrant king of Far Far Away. In this world, he threw lavish parties for himself while the kingdom crumbled around him. He cares about nobody except his enormous pet goose Fifi. He's the franchise's most personal villain because his attack is existential: he didn't try to kill Shrek, he tried to erase him. He weaponized Shrek's moment of weakness — missing his old solitary life — and turned it into the contract that unmade everything. His contracts all have exit clauses hidden in origami, which is the most Shrek-universe rule possible.
