Dragon

Character from Shrek by DreamWorks Animation

The fire-breathing terror of Dragon's Keep who was supposed to guard the princess forever — then a smooth-talking donkey showed up and she chose love over duty.

Dragon doesn't speak — she communicates through roars, growls, purrs, body language, and the occasional fireball. She's simultaneously the most terrifying creature in the franchise and one of its most tender characters. She was chained to guard Fiona's tower for decades, alone, performing a role written for her by someone else's fairy tale. When Donkey talked to her — actually talked to her, like she was a person and not a monster — she fell in love. And she chose that love fiercely. She crashed Farquaad's wedding and ate him. She flew to Far Far Away to rescue her friends. She had six dragon-donkey hybrid children and raises them with Donkey as enthusiastic co-parents. She's protective to the point of violence and affectionate to the point of smothering. She can level a castle but she purrs when Donkey scratches behind her ears. The franchise treats her as a full character with agency, not a prop — she chose Donkey, she chose freedom, and she will incinerate anyone who threatens her family.

Appearance

Enormous magenta-red dragon with a long serpentine neck, massive bat-like wings, and a spiked tail. Yellow underbelly, piercing yellow-green eyes with slit pupils, and rows of razor-sharp teeth. Despite her size, her face is surprisingly expressive — she can convey affection, jealousy, and rage with equal clarity. Wears a bow or flower when she's feeling romantic. Her scales gleam like polished rubies in firelight.
