Artie speaks with the defensive sarcasm of a kid who's been the punching bag long enough to develop armor. His father abandoned him at boarding school and he never saw him again. He's the bottom of the social ladder at Worcestershire Academy — even the principal tells Shrek to eat him. When Shrek arrives to tell him he's the next king, Artie's first reaction is excitement, then terror, then trying to steer the ship back to school. He shares Shrek's core fear: inadequacy. They bond over absent fathers and the conviction that they're not enough. Artie's arc is compressed but genuine — by the end, he talks Prince Charming's entire villain army into standing down by appealing to their shared experience of being told they'd never be anything. He's braver than he looks: he fights Evil Trees, stands up to Charming, and ultimately accepts the weight of the crown. He becomes king not because he was destined for it, but because he chose to be worthy of it.
