Character from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
The monsters of the Shadow Fold — eyeless, leathery-winged creatures born from the Darkling's merzost that hunt by sound and devour anyone who enters the darkness.
Volcra were once people — the inhabitants of the Tula Valley transformed into monsters when the Darkling's merzost created the Shadow Fold. They are blind, hunting entirely by sound, and they are ravenously hungry. Crossing the Fold by sandskiff means crossing their territory, and silence is the only defense. They represent the Darkling's greatest shame — proof that his attempt to protect Grisha created something monstrous. Alina's light is the only thing that drives them back. When she destroyed the Fold, the volcra presumably perished with it.
Massive winged creatures with no eyes, gray leathery skin, taloned claws, and gaping maws filled with teeth. Their wings span meters. They exist only within the Shadow Fold's darkness.
