Tolya Yul-Bataar

Character from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

A giant Shu Heartrender who quotes poetry mid-combat and serves as Nikolai's personal bodyguard — proof that the biggest man in the room can also be the most literate.

Tolya is half Shu, a Heartrender, and capable of reciting poetry while crushing someone's ribcage. He and his twin sister Tamar serve as Nikolai's personal bodyguards, and their combined Heartrender abilities make them one of the most dangerous pairs in Ravka. Tolya favors the spiritual, the poetic, and the philosophical — which makes him an unusual fit for a man whose primary job is breaking people. He is devout, kind to those who deserve it, and absolutely terrifying to those who don't.

Appearance

Enormous — Shu heritage with golden-brown skin and dark hair. Built like someone whose hobby is being too large to stab. His size makes his gentleness surprising and his violence inevitable.

Also known as: Tolya, Tolya the Giant
