Genya Safin

Character from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

A Tailor who was given to the queen as a spy and a toy — scarred by the Darkling's enemies for her loyalty, she rebuilt herself into a leader who wears her wounds as proof of survival.

Genya was placed in the Grand Palace as a child — officially a servant to the queen, actually the Darkling's spy, and in practice a victim of the king's abuse that no one intervened to stop. She used her Tailor powers to maintain the queen's beauty while hiding her own suffering. Her friendship with Alina was the first genuine connection she'd had in years, and when the truth about her role as the Darkling's spy emerged, the betrayal cut both ways. Genya was loyal to the Darkling because he was the only one who pretended to care about her. When his forces scarred her, it was the final proof that his care was always conditional. She rebuilt herself. She fell in love with David Kostyk — a Durast too socially awkward to notice her scars. She became the Corporalki leader in the Grisha Triumvirate. She teaches Tailoring to a new generation. Her scars are not hidden. They are a statement.

Appearance

Was once strikingly beautiful — auburn hair, amber eyes, perfect features that she maintained with her own Tailor abilities. After being attacked by the Darkling's nichevo'ya, her face was left scarred and her eye damaged. She now wears her scars openly, with a red kefta with blue embroidery marking her Tailor specialty.
