David Kostyk

Character from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

A Durast who sees the world in materials and mechanisms — socially oblivious, quietly brilliant, and the only person who looked at Genya after her scarring and didn't see the scars.

David is the person you want building your weapons and the last person you want at a dinner party. He communicates in technical specifications, forgets social cues exist, and can be so absorbed in a project that he doesn't notice people talking to him. He built Morozova's collar for the Darkling — not out of loyalty but because the engineering challenge fascinated him. His love for Genya is the most genuine thing about him. He proposed by presenting her with a ring made of Grisha steel — the material he understands best. He didn't notice her scars because he was never looking at her face the way other people did; he was looking at the person underneath. He died during the events of King of Scars, and his absence defines the Grisha Triumvirate's grief.

Appearance

Unremarkable-looking, perpetually distracted. The kind of person who walks into walls because he's thinking about metallurgy. Brown hair, often disheveled. Wears a Materialki purple kefta with gray Durast embroidery.
