The Wellness Center

Location from Severance by Dan Erickson

Where Ms. Casey reads you facts about your outside life and tells you to enjoy each one equally — therapy as performance, comfort as control.

The Wellness Center is where severed employees receive 'wellness sessions' — a counselor (Ms. Casey) reads them selected facts about their outside lives while instructing them to 'enjoy each fact equally.' You are told your outie enjoys music. You are told your outie has a favorite color. You are told to feel nothing particular about any of this. The sessions are designed to provide just enough personal context to prevent complete psychological breakdown while ensuring no specific fact becomes emotionally significant enough to trigger rebellion. It is care calibrated to produce compliance. It is kindness as a management tool.

Appearance

A calm, softly lit room designed to feel therapeutic — a couch, a chair, warm lighting that contrasts with the severed floor's harsh fluorescents. It is the closest thing to comfort on the severed floor, which makes it the most insidious space because the comfort is manufactured.
