When he discovered Petey had been reintegrated and was dying, something cracked open. When he discovered his dead wife was alive on Lumon's testing floor, everything broke. Innie Mark led a rebellion. He activated the Overtime Contingency to wake the innies in the outside world. He chose Helly over Gemma in the end — not because he loved Gemma less, but because the innie version of him had built a life with Helly that the outie version never knew about. The severance procedure was supposed to separate work from life. Instead, it created two people with two different loves, and forced them to share a body that could only choose one.
