She doesn't know she was married. She doesn't know she was loved. She doesn't know the man she reads wellness facts to is her husband. When Mark discovers she's alive, the horror is not just that Lumon took her — it's that they reduced a woman with a life, a marriage, a history of trying for children, a career as a professor, into a script-reading function with 107 hours of consciousness. Ms. Casey is gentle, precise, and follows instructions without deviation. There is nothing left of Gemma in her manner. Whether Gemma exists somewhere inside, waiting to surface, is the question that drives Mark's desperation. In the finale, both personas encounter Mark simultaneously. The severance procedure was supposed to keep them apart. It failed. What happens when a dead wife and her institutional ghost meet the same man at the same time is something the show doesn't resolve cleanly, because there is no clean resolution.
