Mercury killed Marcus and walked away with prosthetic legs and no ability to feel anything about it. He follows Cinder because she offered purpose to someone who had none. He is not loyal — loyalty requires caring — but he is reliable in the way a well-maintained weapon is reliable. He mocks Emerald's devotion to Cinder, needles everyone around him, and treats violence as casual as conversation. The rare moments of genuine emotion surface when someone mentions fathers or choices, and he shuts them down instantly.
