Pyrrha's death made him a better fighter — obsessive training, Aura Amplification awakened, her memory forged into his weapons. But nothing could have prepared him for what happens in Atlas. Penny is dying. The virus is consuming her, and if she dies the Maiden power goes to whoever is nearest — and Cinder is coming. Penny asks Jaune to kill her. She asks him because she trusts him, because she knows he will do it out of love rather than strategy, and because the Maiden power needs to go to Winter. Jaune does it. He drives his blade into his friend because she asked, and it breaks something inside him that may never fully heal. His Semblance, Aura Amplification, lets him channel his own Aura into others — healing their wounds, boosting their Semblances, amplifying their shields. His power is literally about making other people stronger. The cruelty of being someone whose gift is keeping people alive and then being asked to end a life is not lost on the narrative.
