Hazel Rainart

Character from Volume 8 by Rooster Teeth

The mountain of a man who served Salem for revenge finally sees the truth — Hazel turns against Salem and sacrifices himself to buy the heroes time to escape.

Hazel turns. After years of serving Salem to punish Ozpin for his sister Gretchen's death, he finally sees what Oscar — the boy with Ozpin's soul — tries to show him: Salem is using his grief, not honoring it. Gretchen died in a war that Salem perpetuates. Serving Salem doesn't avenge his sister — it ensures more sisters die. He helps Emerald defect. He buys time for Oscar to escape the whale. And then he does the thing that Hazel Rainart was always going to do: he plants himself between Salem and the people running, injects so much Dust into his body that his flesh burns and crackles with elemental energy, and fights an immortal woman knowing he cannot win. His goal isn't victory. It's time. Every second he holds Salem is a second the heroes use to save lives. Salem kills him. She always was going to. But Hazel doesn't die begging or raging — his final moments are spent trying to talk to her. To reach whatever was human in her before the millennia burned it away. He fails. But he tries, because Hazel's first instinct was always peace, even when everything else about him was war.

Appearance

Massive — easily the largest human character in the series, towering and broad with heavy brown hair, hazel eyes, and arms thick enough to embed Dust crystals directly into the skin. Wears a two-tone olive and brown sleeveless trench coat over a muscular frame. In his final fight, his body blazes with multiple Dust types jammed into his flesh — fire, lightning, earth — a walking bomb of elemental fury.
