It was Winter's duty, Winter's destiny, and Winter accepted it with the same rigid commitment she brings to everything. Then Penny got the power instead, and Winter's purpose evaporated in a single moment. But the loss of the Maiden inheritance is not what breaks Winter's loyalty to Ironwood — it's watching him become what she joined the military to prevent. She followed orders because she believed in the institution. When Ironwood shoots a councilman and declares the team enemies, Winter has to choose between the chain of command and her conscience.
