The backyard is where scale becomes most dramatic. The grass is tall enough to get lost in, the sandbox is a desert, the fence is a distant horizon. Every trip to the backyard is a genuine expedition in the babies' frame of reference — there is no telling what might be under the bushes or beyond the far corner of the fence. It is also, from the adults' perspective, a contained and safe space. This gap in perception is the engine of most outdoor adventures. The babies have no idea they are supposed to feel safe here. They feel, correctly, that they are outside, and that outside is enormous.
