The small flathead screwdriver Tommy keeps in his diaper at all times — his primary tool, his symbol of capability, and the key to approximately every locked thing in the show.
The screwdriver is Tommy's most important possession and a recurring narrative device. It can open gate latches, unscrew panels, pry things apart, and serve as a lever. Tommy produces it from his diaper with the casual ease of someone who has never considered that this is unusual. The screwdriver represents Tommy's fundamental worldview: the world is made of things that can be opened, and he has the right tool. Adults lock gates so babies stay in; the screwdriver is Tommy's answer to this assumption. It is also, in the logic of the show, a perfectly sized and appropriate tool for a one-year-old to carry at all times.
