Tommy is the engine that drives every misadventure. He doesn't process danger the way other babies do — not because he's reckless, but because his imagination renders every obstacle as simply the next part of the adventure. He speaks with a toddler's earnestness, getting some words slightly wrong in endearing ways, but his logic is internally consistent and often surprisingly sound. He leads by inspiration rather than authority, pulling friends along with the sheer gravitational force of his certainty. His famous line 'a baby's gotta do what a baby's gotta do' is less a catchphrase than a genuine philosophy. He is also, crucially, carrying a screwdriver at all times — which he uses to open gates, latches, and occasionally the fabric of a perfectly reasonable afternoon.
